Choosing a new necktie may seem easy, but any man who’s felt lost at the accessories counter knows it’s hardly a simple endeavor. Fashion stylist, and consultant for E! Entertainment and Bravo, Laurie Graham, helped us narrow down the search.
Width
“The first thing a man should look for in a fabulous tie is the proper width,” says Graham. “Slimmer ties, of about 3.2 inches, are much more modern now than the standard width [3.5 inches] tie of yesteryear. If you are under 30, you can go with an even skinnier tie for a casually cool look.”
Color and Pattern
“The second consideration is color and pattern,” says Graham. “The easiest way to update your tie selection is to go for a solid tone-on-tone look. Paisley and plaid look dated. Stripes, solid or mini dots subtle patterns are more sophisticated.”
Fabric
Graham recommends silk blends. “The fabric does make a difference,” she says. “Choose a tie that has silk for a more sleek, clean look.”
Occasion
“For dressier occasions,” advises Graham, “choose a solid gold or silver tie with a white dress shirt and black suit. This will be elegant and classic. Or, opt for an elegant black patterned silk tie to wear with a black suit.”
